Pedro Ripper on CNN Money Brazil: Innovations in digital payments 2025

Created 30 Jan 25

Financial digitalization in Brazil has reached a turning point with the massive adoption of Pix and other payment methods. In an interview with CNN Money Brazil, Pedro Ripper, CEO of Bemobi, analyzed the evolution of digital payments in the country and how these innovations will continue to transform the way Brazilians manage their money.

From cash payments to the digital era

The transformation of Brazil’s payment ecosystem has been rapid and profound.

Until recently, any non-face-to-face payment had to be made in cash. Most purchases in the physical world were paid for with bills and coins.

The arrival of Pix marked a radical shift in this landscape, offering a faster and more accessible alternative to traditional payments such as credit cards and bank slips. In just a few years, this system has become the preferred payment method for millions of Brazilians, driven by its ease of use and the absence of fees for consumers.

The impact of financial inclusion and the pandemic

One of the key factors behind Pix’s popularity has been the increase in financial inclusion.

Today, almost the entire Brazilian population is banked, with levels exceeding 90%. This has led to a rise in digital transactions and a decline in cash usage.

The pandemic further accelerated this transformation, driving the digitalization of payments and encouraging the adoption of more efficient and secure methods.

According to Mastercard’s report "State of Financial Inclusion After COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean 2023", more than 40 million Brazilians gained access to banking for the first time thanks to government subsidy programs during the pandemic. This represented a 73% reduction in the unbanked population in the country.
